In May, Year 10 and 12 German students visited the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith to see a modern adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s famous play “Der Gute Mensch von Sezuan” – “The Good Person of Szechwan”. This led to the Brecht Project, in which students came together to reflect on Brecht’s theatre, his challenge of conventions, and the relevance of the play for today’s audiences. The result: A podcast – the first in a series of podcasts to be held this academic year around Brecht.

Amelia, Editor of The Linguist, led a conversation with fellow Year 12 German student Isabella, as well as Arushi and Samhita in Year 10, Ms Wettreich from the Drama Department, and Frau Venter, Head of German and Modern Languages. They discussed their impressions from watching the play, what they had learnt about Brecht’s theatrical conventions, read a section from the play in German, and discussed his enduring influence and relevance.
