An account of an Italian trip to the opera!

Il 5 dicembre, le studenti italiani hanno avuto la fortuna di andare al Royal Opera House per guardare le opere ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ di Pietro Mascagni e ‘Pagliacci’ di Ruggero Leoncavallo accompagnato dalla preside, Signora Bingham!

Entrambe opera seguono lo stilo del movimento artistico, ‘il verismo’, popolare in italia alla fine del diciannovesimo secolo. Questo stilo è caratterizzato da l’attenzione sulla vita contemporanea dei poveri e le ingiustizie sociali.

Le opere del verismo sono ambientate in paesi di sicilia orientale e raccontano storie di delitti d’onore.

Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci

On 5 December, the Italian students were lucky enough to go to the Royal Opera House to watch the operas ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ by Pietro Mascagni and ‘Pagliacci’ by Ruggero Leoncavallo accompanied by the headmistress, Mrs Bingham!

Both works follow the style of the artistic movement, ‘il verismo’, popular in Italy at the end of the 19th century. This style is characterised by its focus on the contemporary life of the poor and social injustices.

The works of verismo are set in the villages of eastern Sicily and tell stories of honour killings.
