Ella (Year 12) reviews this classic feel good Russian Rom-Com – a great option for New Year’s celebrations!

‘Ирония судьбы или с лёгким паром’ – это классическая комедия, которая вышла на cоветские экраны в 1976 году, один из самых известных фильмов режиссёра Эльдара Рязанова.  

Новогодняя ночь была одним из самых весёлых и радостных праздников в году, особенно в календаре cоветского человека. По этой причине этот фильм стал таким популярным и продолжает быть на экранах телевизоров каждый год, даже после сорока лет.  

Почему же этот фильм не теряет свою привлекательность? 

Наверное, у многих будут разные ответы на этот вопрос. Для меня это было несомненно отличные актёры, например, Андрей Мягков, Барбара Брыльска, Юрий Яковлев и многие другие, красивая музыка в исполнение талантливых певцов и очень точное описание cоветской жизни этой эпохu. 

This film is a classic Russian rom-com, produced in 1976. It used to be shown on TV every New Year’s Eve in Soviet homes and still remains a family favourite. In the USSR, it was illegal to celebrate Christmas or Channukah. Therefore, New Year’s Eve was a winter celebration enjoyed by all. 

The story follows a middle-aged man, Zhenya, who, after having one too many drinks at the bathhouse with his friends, wakes up in an apartment identical to his. However, when he is startled awake by an angry woman pouring water on him, he soon realises he is far from home. Once calming down, the pair realise they both live in the same number apartment on 3^rd Builders Street, although one lives in Moscow (Zhenya) and the other in St Petersburg (Nadya). With no available flights for hours, Zhenya is forced to spend NYE with Nadya and the two soon realise they have much in common, like their love for singing. The film has a classic enemy to lover storyline.  

In addition, the movie has an underlying subtle political message. The identical apartments, with identical locks and identical furniture, speak to the drab uniformity of life in the USSR under President Brezhnev’s rule. The ridiculous scenario of walking into the exact same apartment in a completely different city mocks the non-sensical Communist regime, which stole people’s individuality and freedom.  

Overall, I highly recommend this movie. Not only will it introduce you to the Russian language or expand your Russian vocabulary but is a well made and enjoyable historical and political ‘feel good’ film.
